The Melik Society’s purpose is to bring about the restoration of two Victorian steam vessels whose remains are still extant in Khartoum, so that, as Sudanese national antiquities, they can benefit the country’s embryonic tourist industry. The map, for the society’s magazine, Gunboat, illustrated an article on recent developments in Sudan, including the imminent separation of South Sudan as a new nation state.
